Their focus this year is on sustainable travel and waste. They have already got Bronze award from Eco-Schools for their initiatives and determination towards making our school a greener place to be and will continue this year in ensuring we run effective recycling systems and that the whole school and community are made aware of the small steps everyone can make to support the future generations. Similarly, they are working toward TFL Stars accreditation which means Transport for London will recognise us a school who strongly value sustainable travel to and from school as well as trips made within the school day.

What have the Green Team been up to?
This year, the Green Team is focusing on sustainable energy, waste and promoting biodiversity. They have already got Bronze award from Eco-Schools for their initiatives and determination towards making our school a greener place to be and will continue this year in ensuring we run effective recycling systems and that the whole school and community are made aware of the small steps everyone can make to support the future generations. Similarly, they are working toward Zero Carbon Schools, an initiative aimed to reduce the school’s carbon footprint by creating small projects around the school to reduce energy consumption and promote biodiversity through the productive use of greener spaces.
Autumn Term
Throughout the Autumn term, the Green Team focused on the importance of taking activity journeys to school. Our fantastic representatives informed each class of the importance of using more sustainable modes of transport to school, not only to reduce our carbon footprint, but also to promote active lifestyles too! Each class received 3 special badges to showcase their involvement in this initiative.
Spring Term
This half term, the Green Team will start the term leading an assembly about the advantages of having solar panels installed at SJSJ. This will help reduce our carbon emissions as a school and reduce electricity costs. During the assembly, the Green Team representatives will provide ways we can raise money for this great cause! The Green Team will also be conducting an environmental review of SJSJ. This will showcase the fantastic things we already have in place as an eco-school, and areas we could further develop to ensure we are doing as much as possible to contribute to taking care of our local environment and community. We will then draft a plan of action that we will implement in the latter half of the Spring term.
Summer Term
Throughout the Spring term, the Green Team focused on conducting an
environmental audit across the school, as part of the Zero Carbon Schools initiative.
Our fantastic representatives audited the school based on energy consumption,
school spending on resources, recycling and food waste. By conducting this audit,
the Green Team were able to analyse how effectively SJSJ are reducing their carbon emissions, and create plans to further reduce our carbon footprint.
This half term, with summer and warmer days fast approaching, the Green Team will focus on how we can utilise our outdoor spaces effectively to promote biodiversity across the school grounds. Each week, the Green Team will be working closely with Mr Bartek and Miss Gedney to water the plants around the school, and support with some gardening to reduce weeds in the school’s flower beds and make space for more plants.
In addition, the Green Team will take responsibility for ensuring food waste and recycling is being correctly disposed of each day across the school.
Towards the end of the Summer 1 term, the Green Team will be drafting plans for
our very exciting Green Week, which will take place in Summer 2.
