Wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do at SJSJ and we strive to ensure that all children feel safe and happy. The Wellbeing Warriors are a group of compassionate, empathetic children from each year group who have been selected by their peers to be wellbeing representatives for the school. These children care about the wellbeing of others and will work closely with Miss Khaleel to generate ways we can support the children in our school with their mental health. This team will ensure that pupils are talking about their feelings through the zones of regulation, discuss ways we can self-regulate and ensure that wellbeing remains top of everyone’s priority at St John and St James.
These are our Wellbeing Warriors for this academic year
Miss Khaleel is our Wellbeing Warriors steering group lead. She will be working closely with the Wellbeing Warrior team throughout the year. Keep an eye out for updates via the school newsletter and website.
Autumn Term
Throughout the autumn term, the wellbeing warriors completed an audit of the playground to assess how effective the outdoor environment supported the emotional and mental wellbeing of pupils. They looked at ways in which we could improve the environment to create a calming space where children could reflect, relax and rest and have quiet time if they needed to. As a result, the children decided that more seating area in our prayer area would be beneficial. They created a ‘wish list’ of resources and, when they arrived, worked hard to enhance the environment so it is a more peaceful and calming space. They also added flowers and colourful decorations to create a mindful space. The children have enjoyed using this area for quiet reflection time and refer to it as a safe and calming space to go to self-regulate.
Spring Term
This term, the Wellbeing Warriors are focusing on ways we can further support providing mindful spaces for children within the class environment. We will begin by completing an audit of the current provision and discussing what we could implement to support children’s emotional wellbeing when they feel dysregulated in class. We can then discuss ways to further enhance our current reflection areas within classrooms so children can have time out to complete wellbeing activities. Our aim is to have happier children who feel confident with self-managing their feelings and coping skills which will support them throughout their lives. Positive management of social and emotional behaviours, as well as obtaining knowledge about behaviour influences, is a vital skill to learn in our school. We strive for all children to build resilience and an awareness of themselves so they can manage their physical and mental health going forward.
