We are pleased to invite you into school to take part in a special opportunity to experience our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) initiative, which we have been actively implementing across the school.
To give you a chance to see the impact of this initiative in action and to get involved in your child’s play experience, we are inviting parents and carers to attend lunchtime play sessions on the following dates:
Wednesday 11th June, 12:30 – 1:00pm – for parents of children in Reception, Year 2, Year 5 and Year 6.
Wednesday 18th June, 12:30 – 1:00pm – for parents of children in Year 1, Year 3 and Year 4.
If you would like to attend, you will be required to complete the following Google Form to register:
Please note, to ensure the safety of our children at all times, spaces for this event will be allocated based on the order in which the first 40 Google Forms are received. As places are limited, we will be operating on a first come, first served basis.
We also ask that ONE parent or carer per household attends.
Any parents or carers unable to attend this session, will be prioritised for an upcoming July session.

This week in our spiritual corner, we focused on making compliment cards for people that were special to us and those we felt needed more help in boosting their confidence.
Our word of the week was humility, and the children had to think of ways they had to show humility, with a focus on other people and people we find special to us.
We then had some reflection time and discussed what humility meant and how we can show humility in other areas of our lives. We then said a prayer asking God to help be more humble in our day and day lives.
School starts promptly at 8:55am each day. To ensure a smooth and focused start for all pupils, we kindly ask that every child arrives on time and ready to learn.
Our Pastoral Manager will be closely monitoring punctuality in the next half term.
Persistent lateness may result in a Penalty Notice Warning being issued, which can lead to a fine.
If you are experiencing any difficulties with getting your child to school on time, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to help and want to work with families to ensure all pupils have the best possible start to their day.

We’re excited to share that Winkworth is generously sponsoring our PTA again this year!
The real estate agent is offering £25 per signboard displayed outside your home for 6 weeks. Last year, this initiative raised an incredible £700, and we’re aiming to exceed that in 2025! To take part, your home can be in Hackney, Islington or anywhere West of Hackney (eg: Tower Hamlets) and be able to display a Winkworth board. If you’re eligible and willing to support us, please let the school (office@johnjames.hackney.sch.uk) or your class PTA rep know by Wednesday 21st May.
The boards will go up around 28th May, just in time to help promote our Multicultural Evening on 27th June. If you can encourage friends, family, or neighbours within the area to join in, that would be even better!

Thank you for your wonderful gifts and blessings. We know that everything good comes from you. We thank you for our families, our friends, and for all the things that make our lives special.

We’d like to remind all families of the rules regarding school attendance and the implications of taking your child out of school during term time without authorisation.
Children must attend school every day unless there is a valid reason for absence. Holidays, family trips, or events during term time are not considered valid reasons and will be recorded as unauthorised absences unless exceptional circumstances are agreed in advance by Miss Gladstone (Headteacher).
Taking your child out of school without permission may result in a Fixed Penalty Notice (fine) issued by Hackney Education.
The fine is £80 per parent, per child if paid within 21 days.
If not paid within 21 days, the fine increases to £160 per parent, per child.
Failure to pay may result in prosecution and a fine of up to £2,500 per parent and/or a criminal record.
Please note: both parents can be fined, even if they are not married, separated, divorced, or living in different households. The law applies to anyone with parental responsibility or day-to-day care of the child.
If you believe there are exceptional circumstances, please speak with the school before making any travel arrangements. Requests must be made in writing and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
We appreciate your support in making sure your child receives the full benefit of their education through regular attendance.
