Reading
Reading Logs are given out at the start of each school year to all children in our school. These must be brought to school every day and taken home every night. Children should record the following information in their reading records:
- Title, author and page number of the book they are reading
- Several sentences about what they have read
- Any other homework they have done on each day
- Children should also record any significant learning they feel they have done, this may be in school or at home, a fact or a target they have achieved
Maths
In addition to their one piece of maths homework each week, all pupils are also encouraged to be able to fluently recite their times tables. As a school, we have signed up to a programme called Times Table Rockstars. All pupils have been issued with a unique user log in and password which they can also use to access the site from at home. The site can easily be accessed by clicking on the link in the website section above.
Spelling
We use the Headstart spelling programme from Year 1 through to Year 6. This programme focuses on spelling rules, where children are encouraged to partition the word into its root word and then apply the appropriate rule. Four rules are taught simultaneously over the course of four weeks, with a practise spelling test taking place weekly and a formal spelling test taking place at the end of the four week spelling period. In order to practise our spelling rules and ensure success for our spelling test, we set spelling homework every Friday, which applies to one of our four focus rules. This should enable children to practise their spelling rules through a variety of different activities and varied fluency, therefore heightening their understanding of the rules.
Whole School Literacy Homework
Each week, your child will be issued with a piece of writing homework which is linked to a whole school writing topic. This piece of work will be uploaded to your child’s google classroom page.
