Jewellery
Parents/Carers are reminded that children should not be wearing any jewellery to school. If your child has pierced ears, small studs may be worn.
Nail polish
No child should be wearing nail varnish in school. If you have attended an event and your child has been wearing nail varnish this should be removed before they come back to school.
Footwear
There have been increasingly more children wearing bright coloured trainers to school. You are reminded we have a uniform policy and the correct footwear is black shoes or trainers.
The PTA will be holding a bake sale on Friday 6th October at 3.30pm.
Please help us by donating tasty treats such as cakes, biscuits and savoury bakes to sell. Everyone loves a homemade bake, of course, but shop-bought donations are just as welcome!

Please bring your bakes to the school office on Friday 6th October before 3pm.
We are pleased to announce that our first parents evening this year is on Monday 9th October 2023 from 2-7pm in the school hall.
This is a great opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher, hear and see what your child has been learning in class and discuss your child’s next steps.
All teachers will have their sign up sheets with them at the end of each day, starting on Monday, so please speak to them about booking an appointment.
If your child attends after school clubs on a daily basis, then please call the office on 02089852045 and the office team will book an appointment for you.
Thank you
Parent/carers are reminded no holidays are to be taken during term time.
If there are exceptional circumstances parents must put their request in writing and attach all evidence for the Headteacher for consideration. We will then respond to you in writing the outcome of your request.
All requests must be submitted at least 3 to 4 weeks prior to the date you wish to leave on and you must wait for the outcome letter or email before any travel is booked.
Parents/carers are reminded you have a legal duty to ensure your children attend school regularly and punctually.
Harvest Festival is being celebrated throughout the month of October, where farmers and growers give thanks for a successful harvest season and churches, community groups, schools and individuals give to those who are less fortunate.
Harvest season makes a real difference to families by collecting food from local schools and delivering it to those who need it most. This year we are asking all parents and carers to donate food items to support this cause.
Which items can be donated?
Please donate any of the following items to support local charities:
– Tinned food or spreads
– Long-life milk, juice and drinks
– Dried pasta
– Cooking sauces
– Condiments
– Tea and coffee
– Rice
– Cereal
– Toiletries
All items can be dropped off at the main school office.
This half term, The Green Team will be focusing on litter and waste. We will review what we are currently doing as a school to ensure we are reusing and recycling as much as we can, and what areas we can focus on to ensure we are minimising waste.
As recycling week is in October, our aim is to help the children of SJSJ understand the importance of recycling and how to recycle correctly both in school and the wider community.
At SJSJ, we believe that the wellbeing of everyone in our school family is important for our happiness and good mental health.
Our Wellbeing Warriors are dedicated to supporting the wellbeing of our peers and our school environment.
This term, we will be looking at actively promoting and prioritising mental and physical health and take proactive steps to maintain well-being and inspire others to do the same.
We will help by sharing tips, resources and support to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
The City & Hackney Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) wanted to highlight workshops and courses that are being made available for parents across the borough. All of these events are free, but if you’re interested please sign up quickly before spaces run out.

To celebrate the start of the new school year, we are running an art competition on the theme ‘What SJSJ Means To Me’. You can create an artwork in any medium (colouring pencils, felt tips, crayons, paints, collage etc.) showcasing what our school community means to you. To be in with a chance of winning the top prize, you must ensure your piece of art;
If you do not have art materials at home, there will be an opportunity during a lunchtime this half-term for you to make your masterpiece.
Please return your artwork to Miss Farrington or your class teacher by Friday 13th October.
Year 4 have been writing descriptive pieces based on the Charles Dickens book Oliver Twist. Please find Jerry’s attached for the newsletter.
Oliver was a solitary, devastated orphan. His mother, who loved him very much, had died and his father, who was selfish, had left him. As a result, Oliver lived and worked in the gloomy, dusty workhouse alongside other orphans. The conditions were dreadful and life in the workhouse was cruel and hard but the worst thing of all was the lack of food. They wanted more food, even though the cold, watery gruel tasted like nothing. Their stomach rumbled as loud as a steam train that rattled the workhouse windows like thunder.
Oliver had pale, bloodshot eyes, which were hidden, under his long, matted hair that hadn’t been washed for years. He had pale, blue lips and a sickly complexion as a result of his lack of nutritious food. The clothes he wore were ragged and tarnished and hung off his thin, weary body. He was as thin as a rake and his stomach constantly grumbled for more food. His body was covered in bruises from working day and night and he felt constantly exhausted. Life in the workhouse was hard.
