Spanish Ambassador Assembly
A huge well done to our school Spanish Ambassadors, who carried out a fantastic assembly today. They shared lots of fascinating information about Spanish speaking countries across the world, as well as what they are learning about in class. They planned the whole assembly themselves and we are so incredibly proud of them! Muy Bien!
African Drumming Performance
As part of our Black History Month celebrations, we had the phenomenal Abass come to our school this week to carry out a wonderful drumming performance.
Every single child and adult in the school hall had a huge smile on their faces, as we danced and sang along to his incredible performance. Originating from Ghana, Abass is a professional performer and musician and brings the energy of Ghanaian drumming to schools.
We were all blown away by the performance and it has definitely made our week!
Reading Champions go to the Town Hall!
This week, our amazing school reading champions went to The Town Hall for their first Hackney Reading Champions meeting.
It was a wonderful opportunity for them to meet other reading champions, doing the same job in other Hackney schools. There was a real buzz in the room, as the children discussed their favourite books, genres and ideas for raising the profile in their schools.
Our reading champions left filled with ideas and enthusiasm from such an inspiring afternoon.
Here they are showing their new badges, as well as with all the other reading champions that they met!

Oracy Day
At St John and St James, children learning how to talk effectively is a priority and underpins the teaching and learning which takes place everyday. We use meaningful talk opportunities across the curriculum to deepen understanding, but also recognise the importance of equipping children with the skills to learn how to talk effectively for future success. In order to explicitly teach these skills, we will be having an Oracy Day on Friday 25th October.
Children will spend the day developing their speaking, listening and communication skills in a range of contexts. They will be preparing for a presentation or debate which they will present to you, our parents and carers.
Date for the Diary: You are invited into the classroom to be part of our Oracy Day! We will be welcoming parents into the classrooms on Friday 25th October from 2.30 – 3.15pm to watch the debates and presentations, as well as provide feedback to our children based on the school Talk Guidelines.
We look forward to seeing lots of you then!
Walk To School October
This month at SJSJ, we are celebrating Walk to School October. We are encouraging every child to make at least one active journey to school each week.
This could be in the form of walking, cycling, scootering, or getting out of the car/bus slightly earlier to walk to school. Each month, the Green Team will be giving out badges to those children who have made a conscious effort to take active journeys to school.
Can You Help with Our Christmas Raffle?
Our annual Christmas Raffle is fast approaching, and we’re reaching out to parents and carers for help with prize donations! Last year, thanks to the generosity of local businesses and families, we raised £1,300, which went towards school trips and a solar panel project. This year, we’re aiming to raise £2,500 for our Summer School Trips Appeal and playground improvements.
If you own or work for a business that might be willing to donate a prize, we’d love to hear from you! The school can provide official letters to help you reach out to companies. Any contribution, big or small, makes a difference and will be acknowledged on the school website.
Please contact the PTA at stjohnandstjamespta@gmail.com or the school office to donate by 10 November 2024. Thank you for your support!
Harvest Festival
Harvest Festival is being celebrated throughout the month of October, where farmers and growers give thanks for a successful harvest season; during this time churches, community groups, schools and individuals give to those who are less fortunate. Last Year your generous food donations made a huge difference to those families that needed help the most.
This Harvest, School Council are appealing for donations of dry, tinned, long-life and ambient foods. We will distribute these donations on your behalf to The Hackney Food Bank.
If you would like to make a donation to our appeal during this Harvest season, please give your donations at the school gate office until Friday 25th October.

It will be such a fun night of games, activities, crafts, bouncy castles, food and more.
