Ofsted Celebration Party
For receiving an Outstanding grade on our Ofsted report and in recognition of the amazing pupils we have here at SJSJ, we will be throwing an Ofsted celebration party for them on Tuesday 9th July 2024.
Every day they come to school with a smile on their faces with a huge motivation to learn. We couldn’t be more proud of how well they represented themselves and the school when our inspectors were here.
There will be a children’s entertainer, picnic lunch (the school will provide this) and bouncy castle/games for each class. We cannot wait!
Multicultural Evening
We were so excited to host our annual Multicultural Evening last week. It was lovely to see so many of our parents, carers, past students, current students and of course, our wonderful staff.
This was a celebration of the wonderfully diverse community we serve in Hackney and had an opportunity to share our cultures with each other in the sunshine.
We loved seeing our wonderful children taking part in the very exciting fashion parade, which was always such a highlight; we loved seeing the spectacular clothing the children came dressed in!
Well done to the raffle draw winners.
Paperchain – £10.00 was awarded.
Word Hunt – £10.00 was awarded.
Treat for a day – this will take place on Tuesday 9th July.
Thank you to everyone that helped, donated and took part, as a result we have raised an amazing £1.226.50 for the school! You have made SJSJ Multicultural Evening a smashing success yet again.
Reusable Bottles
At St John & St James, we are striving to do as much as possible to promote sustainability.
We have seen an increasing number of children coming to school with single-use plastic bottles of water. Single-use plastic bottles are easily broken, often not recycled and not a sustainable solution.
Please can we encourage all children to come to school with a reusable bottle of water, rather than a single-use plastic bottle.

Blog Squad
This week, Blog Squad have been writing about how to support Mental Health. Have a look at our posts.
Mental Health Awareness is when are aware about other people’s mental health. Mental Health is about how you feel on the inside. If you enter someone’s personal space, they could get irritated or they might annoy them a lot. So how can we look after our mental health? Here are some ways.
- Talk to someone you trust
- Do fun things like colouring
- Play outside
Aisha – Year 5
At school, we like to keep a focus on our mental health. We have celebrated mental health awareness week this year, and we use mindfulness in the mornings to keep us happy and healthy.
This year’s mental health focus is about us moving around and so in Year 4 we have been thinking about ways to move. One of the ways that we enjoyed was scooting and trampolining. Whether you are playing around with our friends or going outside and exploring nature, you are improving your mental health Mental health awareness week has been running for more than 20 years.
The reason it is so important is because now lots of people know where to find help.
How to support your mental health:
- Start a research project with your students, allowing them to explore and learn more about their mental health.
- Invite mental health professionals into our classrooms to talk about what they do, and what treatments are available to those concerned about their mental health.
- Invite everyone to talk openly about their mental health, if it affects them, and discuss ways they have found that help them to cope with their feelings and emotions
Lucia – Year 4
Mental Health means being happy on the inside and the outside. We are sometimes sad but we can always be happy again. Here are some ways we can help to get happy again:
– colour
– play with toys
– play with family
-eat fun food like ice cream
– go to the park
Our teachers say it is good to go outside and be active so go to the park!
Olive – Year 2
Hackney Music Festival
12 Children have been given the opportunity to learn the violin and cello. They were able to show off what they have learnt at the Hackney Music Festival. We are so proud of their progress.

Year 2 have been learning over 11 songs this past half term. They then performed all songs at the Hackney Music Festival. The made us all proud by singing all songs off by heart.

Keeping Our Children Safe at Home and In School
Mr Watson is our school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead.

If Mr Watson is not available, you can always speak to one of our school’s Deputy Safeguarding Leads:

Social Media and Being Online.
Whilst there are many benefits to pupils having access to the online world, it comes with many risks, especially if a child’s use is unsupervised. Studies have found that excessive use of social media increases a young person’s susceptibility to depression, anxiety, poor body image and self-worth. It can also negatively influence a child’s sleep routine, which in turn can affect their ability to concentrate and thrive in school.
Age restrictions of Social Media Apps
Please be mindful that social media apps are not appropriate for pupils under the age of 13.
Below are the age restrictions for the most popular apps:
What’s App—16 years +
Instagram—13 years +
Facebook—13 years +
Snapchat—13 years +
TikTok—13 Years +
Please ensure you are monitoring what your child is accessing online and agree on some rules about their access to the online world together. While there is no recommended amount of time a child should be spending online each day, please remember that screen time should not replace exercise, time spent together as a family, or sleep. A family agreement is a great way to start a conversation with your whole family about how you all use the internet, and to start discussions together around how to behave in a positive way when online, whether this is at home, at school or at a friend’s.
Childnet.com have an excellent template for an online safety agreement, which you can access at the link below.
