Neurodiversity Celebration Coffee Mornings
This half term 18th – 22nd May, we will be celebrating Neurodiversity Celebration Week! During the week, the children will be engaging in activities to further understand neurodiversity and the special and unique qualities of neurodiverse individuals.
There are often a lot of questions around neurodiversity so we will be hosting coffee mornings in the run up to Neurodiversity Celebration Week to provide parents with a space to ask questions, share experiences and deepen their understanding of neurodiversity in children.
The dates will be –
Tuesday 21st April 9.15 – 10.00
Tuesday 5th May 9.15 – 10.00
Tuesday 19th May 9.15 – 10.00
Please bring yourself and any family members and we look forward to seeing you!
Year 5 Writing Sample
This week in writing, year 5 started our new writing cycle based on the book ‘Warrior Boy’ by Virginia Clay. We started by reading the first chapter, where we meet Ben. Ben is a year 7 student in Hackney, who has big dreams to become a doctor, however there is one thing holding him back, a fear of blood. During a science experiment, Ben has to come face to face with blood, unfortunately he couldn’t quite cope with it and embarrassingly faints in class. When Ben tells his mum and dad about the ordeal, they suggest he spends some time with his uncle in Kenya, who is a member of the Maasai Tribe, they believe he can help Ben with his fear of blood.
Our first lesson this week was our immersion lesson where we conducted research on the Massai tribe. As a class we broke into groups and were given a specific topic to research. One group were given geography, another animals and villages, one researched animals and villages and the last group researched culture. We then came together at the end and shared our findings, which we then organised under headings in our book.
Our second lesson was our grammar lesson. In this lesson we were learning to use a range of techniques to embellish a main clause. We recapped previous learning by recapping techniques we have previously used: fronted adverbials, subordinate clauses, relative clauses etc. We then used rainbow grammar to come up with our own main clause and relative clauses, using the strips of paper to see if we could rearrange our sentence and have it still make sense – leading to creating a drop in relative clause.
Vocal Taster Session
We are holding another absolutely free of charge Taster Session for the Hackney Borough Youth Choir (Yrs 4-6) and the Senior Vocal Ensemble (Yr7+) on Wednesday 22 April, please do get your young people involved! The sessions will take place after school. Details are deliberately omitted from the flyer, families must contact us in advance so we can capture all necessary emergency contact details, rather than having people rock up on the day (which is very challenging!) So we will share all details with them then – though the venue is Cardinal Pole in case this helps you to know.
We are working on a programme with the London Community Gospel Choir this term so this is a fantastic time to get involved.
We especially need more boys – schools, where are all your singing boys? Please do strongly encourage them to come along, both primary and secondary. We are also looking to reignite the Boys Can Sing programme so if this is something you want to be involved with again, or are insterested in contributing to, or finding out more about if you are newer to the borough, then please get in touch!
Please share the attached flyer far and wide, school social media, parents whatsapp groups, whatever your best route for getting the info out is – but especially helpful if you can print and press into the hands of those singers that you think should be doing even more. We are not looking to take kids out of your own choirs, but rather to offer a progression route to those already singing so they can do even more and represent their schools at a borough level.
Schools currently represented in Junior Choir include:
Gainsborough
Gayhurst
HNPS
Lauriston
Millfields
Rushmore
Woodberry Down
And Senior Choir include:
Bridge
CP
CGA
City
Excelsior
Haggerston
MCA
SNS
Stormont
Urswick
We would love to have every school in the borough represented. If you are not sure who your singers are (lots of the senior singers, for example, have moved up from Junior Choir rather than being nominated by their secondary schools so you may be unaware!) then drop me a line and I can send you a list.
With very best wishes
Xanthe
Royal Institute Science Show
We are excited to welcome the Royal Institution to our school for a special Community Science Show.
The Royal Institution is a world-renowned organisation that has been inspiring a love of science for over 200 years. It is known for making science exciting, accessible and relevant through live demonstrations, experiments and engaging talks for all ages.
The theme of the show will focus on explosive food, exploring how everyday ingredients can create surprising and exciting scientific reactions. Children and families will see a range of demonstrations that link to real scientific ideas, such as changes in materials, energy, and how our bodies use food.
Date Wednesday 22nd April
Time 3:00 pm to 3:45 pm
Location School Hall
Families are warmly invited to join us for this engaging and memorable experience. It is a fantastic opportunity to see science brought to life and to share in your child’s learning.
We look forward to seeing you there.
Writing Competition
We are kickstarting the term with our writing competition. This half term, Miss Gedney is encouraging children to write poems about their favourite topic/interest. This could include football, books, music, dancing, history transport…the list is endless! If the children would like to challenge themselves, they could include a rhyme scheme in their poems too. The deadline for entering the competition is Monday 11th May.
End of Day Safeguarding Reminder
A reminder that all parents and carers must remain in the playground during pick-up times and are not permitted to enter the school building. This is a key part of our safeguarding procedures and is essential to keeping all children safe.
Parents and carers may request to speak with their child’s teacher outside in the playground; however, this may not always be possible due to other commitments, such as staff training or scheduled meetings. In these cases, appointments should be arranged through the school office.
We appreciate your cooperation in supporting our safeguarding expectations and helping to ensure clear communication while maintaining a safe environment for all.
Reminder: Outstanding ParentPay Balances
We would like to remind all parents and carers to please check ParentPay to ensure any outstanding balances are cleared. We understand that the festive period can be a costly time for families, and therefore reflected this in our extended payment deadline of 31st January for this term’s Breakfast Club, After School Club, and Wraparound Care.
If anyone needs support with accessing ParentPay, please come to the school office and speak to Miss Nifa, who will be happy to help.
Morning Gate
Please can we remind all parents and carers that the school gate opens at 8.50am, ready for school to start promptly at 8.55am. We kindly ask that parents or carers do not come into the school playground or building with their child/ren.
Teachers and support staff are generally not available in the mornings as they are settling the children straight into assembly – should you need to speak with an adult, please go directly to the school office and Miss Nifa will be more than happy to assist you in arranging a suitable time.
Thank you for your continued support in ensuring that all children come into school in a calm manner and ready for a day of learning.
Late Collection Charges
We would like to remind all families that a late collection charge of £5 for every 5 minutes will be applied if a child is not collected promptly at the end of the school day or from after-school clubs.
Please ensure that you are collecting your child on time to avoid any additional charges.
We also kindly ask that you check your ParentPay account regularly and clear any outstanding balances as soon as possible.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
