21 Nov What’s happening in Year 5 – Week 3
This week in Geography, the children have been thoroughly engaged in learning about Shanghai and London, exploring both the differences and similarities between these two vibrant world cities. Their curiosity and enthusiasm have been wonderful to see!
The class was especially fascinated by some of the cultural traditions found in schools in Shanghai. They were surprised to learn that many children bow to their teachers when entering the classroom as a sign of respect, and that some students even attend classes on weekends. The idea of learning in such a highly competitive environment sparked lots of thoughtful discussion!
We also explored the many ways in which Shanghai and London are alike. The children noticed that both cities are incredibly busy, modern places, filled with tall buildings, bustling streets, and diverse communities. They enjoyed discovering how tea is viewed in both cultures. In Shanghai, serving tea is a traditional sign of respect while here in London we offer tea to any guest as a friendly welcome.
The video attached shows some of the children sharing the differences and similarities they discovered, and even acting them out to show their understanding.
Overall, the children loved comparing the two cities and were eager to share their thoughts and discoveries. It has been a fantastic learning experience that has broadened their understanding of how people live, learn, and show respect across the world.
