05 Dec What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 5
This week in Geography, the children in Year 1 used a range of tools and books to discover where Nigeria is in the world. They explored different maps and globes and were excited to locate Nigeria within the continent of Africa. The children also noticed a large line running across the middle of the globe and learned that this is called the equator. We discussed how the sun shines more directly on this part of the Earth and how this affects the climate in countries close to it.
Working with a partner, the children then found key cities and landmarks in Nigeria, including Lagos and Abuja, which they recognised from our recent weather investigations. They enjoyed spotting these places on both paper maps and digital ones.
To build on this, the children used mapping software and images to explore what Nigeria looks like, talking about its human and physical geography. They were fascinated by the mix of busy city areas, rivers, and natural landscapes. It has been a wonderful week of developing their geographical knowledge and curiosity about the wider world.
