09 Jan What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 1
This term, Year 6 began their new RE unit by exploring Buddhism. They launched the unit by learning about the Dharma (the teachings of Buddhism) and the Three Jewels, discussing what they represent for Buddhists. The children also revisited the story of how the Buddhist faith began, building on their prior learning from Year 3.
As part of the lesson, Year 6 explored the concept of suffering, discussing what it means and how it can be seen in today’s world. Following rich and thoughtful discussions, the children worked in groups to act out scenarios that can cause suffering. They then used the Dharma teachings, alongside their own beliefs and understanding, to suggest ways suffering could be reduced or eased for others. The children demonstrated great empathy and a deep understanding of the importance of compassion, kindness, and supporting others.
