13 Feb What’s happening in Year 5 – Week 6
In Grammar this week, Year 5 learned about how to form and use subordinate clauses within their writing. They began the lesson by recapping the purpose of a main clause – a main clause is a sentence that contains a subject and a verb and can also make sense on its own e.g., Percy shouted.
They then discussed that subordinate clauses are used to add additional information using a subordinating conjunction e.g., for, as, although. The children created main clauses inspired by an extract of text, ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ and in pairs they worked on adding their own subordinate clauses to give some additional information. The children also used rainbow grammar throughout the lesson to help them clearly identify each part of the sentence with confidence; this also allowed them to experiment with moving the position of the subordinate clause.
