27 Mar What’s happening in Year 4 – Week 5
This week in Year 4, we explored the vibrant celebration of Notting Hill Carnival as part of our learning about Diverse Britain. We began by learning about its history, discovering how it was started to celebrate Caribbean culture and bring communities together. We talked about why so many people enjoy attending, from the sense of joy and togetherness to the opportunity to celebrate music, dance, and culture. The children were fascinated by how such an important event has grown over time and what it represents today.
We then used our senses to imagine what it would be like to be there. We discussed the lively sounds of music and steel drums, the bright and colourful costumes filling the streets, and the delicious smells of Caribbean food in the air. Inspired by this, we designed and created our own carnival masks, using bold colours, patterns, and creative details to reflect the energy of the celebration. It was wonderful to see the children expressing themselves so confidently, producing unique and eye-catching masks while deepening their understanding of this important cultural event.
