27 Mar What’s happening in Year 5 – Week 5
The day was finally here. After weeks of research and preparation, we were finally making our savoury muffins.
In order to measure and weigh our ingredients we had to ensure we knew how to calculate mass. We learnt that there are 1000 grams in 1kg and practiced converting between grams and kilograms. After this, we were ready to measure out our ingredients using scales and measuring jugs.
Before beginning, we discussed the importance of safety in the kitchen, we discussed the potential hazard of each station and the importance of concentrating at all times. We also discussed the importance of hygiene and ensured all hands were washed prior to our food preparation.
The children were able to practice lots of different culinary skills. We grated courgette and squeezed out the moisture. We had a chopping station, where we chopped spring onions and roasted red pepper. We measured out and sieved flour, cracked and beat eggs, among other techniques. The class worked incredibly hard and were very excited about their creation and their final product.
