22 May What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 6
This week in Science, Year 6 have been exploring the fascinating topic of evolution and inheritance, with a particular focus on Charles Darwin and his theory of natural selection. The children discussed and researched how animals have adapted to their environments over time and how these adaptations can impact the genetics and survival of future offspring.
The children also explored other important scientists and theories linked to evolution, including the work of Mary Anning. They discussed ideas that both supported and challenged Darwin’s thinking and showed excellent curiosity and critical thinking as they compared different viewpoints and evidence.
To deepen their understanding, the children investigated Darwin’s famous research on finches. They took part in a practical adaptation challenge where they used different objects such as chopsticks, spoons, pegs and tweezers to pick up grains of rice, representing different types of bird beaks. This exciting investigation helped the children understand how adaptations can help animals survive and thrive within their habitats.
Year 6 demonstrated fantastic scientific thinking, teamwork and discussion skills throughout the week, asking thoughtful questions and making excellent links between adaptation, survival and inheritance.
