20 Jun What’s happening in Year 5 – Week 3
Today, Year 5 had an eye-opening and educational visit to Hackney Museum as part of their topic on refugees. The children explored suitcases filled with clues about the journeys and experiences of people who have had to leave their countries in search of safety. These artefacts helped them begin their research for an upcoming fact file on refugee stories.
The highlight of the trip was meeting Maurice, a refugee who came to Hackney from Nigeria. Maurice kindly shared his powerful and emotional story, including the incredible challenges he faced while fleeing his home. The children listened attentively and had the chance to ask thoughtful questions about his experience. Maurice spoke about the extreme conditions he endured—at times, even having to eat rats and snakes to survive.
It was a moving and memorable visit that gave the children a deeper understanding of resilience, courage, and compassion. They returned to school inspired and ready to continue their learning with empathy and curiosity.
