05 Sep What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 1
This week in Maths, our focus has been on grouping amounts into tens and ones to support children’s understanding of place value. Using a range of loose objects such as counters, cubes, and straws, the children explored how to group efficiently by making full sets of ten and identifying any ones left over. We used elastic bands and ten frames to help them see when a full ten had been made.
As part of their learning, the children also drew pictures to represent the groups of ten and the remaining ones, reinforcing their understanding visually. This hands-on and visual approach is helping to build a solid foundation for future work with place value and number operations.
We are really proud of how confidently the children are beginning to use mathematical language and reasoning to explain their thinking. Keep an eye out for more number fun next week!
