07 Nov What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 1
This week in Maths, children have been exploring the concept of capacity — discovering how much different containers can hold. Using cubes, cups, bottles, bowls, and jugs, they predicted which would hold more than, less than, or the same as others, then tested their ideas by filling each container and counting the cubes. Through these hands-on investigations, children practised using mathematical vocabulary confidently and learned the difference between less and fewer. They also created simple concept maps to link key ideas together.
We were so impressed with the children’s teamwork and curiosity as they discussed, compared, and explained their findings using full sentences. Activities like these help build important problem-solving and reasoning skills. Why not continue the fun at home by exploring which containers in your kitchen hold more or less?
