14 Nov What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 2
This half term in Science, Year 1 have been exploring the topic Everyday Materials. The children have been learning to tell the difference between an object (what something is) and the material it is made from. They quickly became experts at spotting materials such as glass, wood, plastic and metal in the world around them.
We also went on an exciting materials hunt around the school, helping the children recognise these materials in real-life contexts. Back in the classroom, they investigated a range of objects and explored their properties, learning key vocabulary such as shiny, hard, soft, bendy and transparent.
To deepen their understanding, the children worked together to sort real objects based on these properties—developing their scientific thinking, language and confidence as young investigators.
Year 1 have shown fantastic curiosity and enthusiasm throughout this unit. We’re so proud of the scientific discussions they’re beginning to have!
