19 Sep What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 3
This week in Year 1, we’ve been diving into the world of History by looking at classroom objects from the past and present. The children have really enjoyed exploring how things have changed over time and thinking about what school might have been like for their parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents!
We began our lesson by examining a range of old and new pictures of classroom items such as chalkboards, ink pots, desks, school bells, and exercise books. The children were fascinated to see how different things used to look, especially the wooden desks with inkwells and the big brass school bell.
We then compared these with the items we use in school today – from interactive whiteboards and felt tip pens to modern plastic chairs and digital tablets. The children discussed which objects they preferred and why, and even had a go at drawing their own versions of “then and now” classrooms.
This activity helped develop the children’s understanding of chronology and the idea of change over time, key elements in early History learning. We’re so proud of their curiosity and thoughtful questions. Why not ask your child what surprised them most about schools in the past?
