21 Nov What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 3
In Science this week, Year 1 have been busy becoming young investigators as we explored the properties of materials through an absorbent and waterproof experiment. The children were introduced to a range of everyday materials, including paper towels, foil, fabric and plastic. Using pipettes, they carefully dropped water onto each material and observed what happened, developing both their prediction skills and their ability to record results clearly.
Before testing, the class discussed their ideas: Which materials might soak up the water? Which might keep it out? The children were brilliant at justifying their predictions using vocabulary such as absorbent, waterproof, shiny, rough and smooth. They then worked methodically to test each material, noticing how quickly or slowly water was absorbed and whether it pooled on the surface.
We were so impressed with how focused the children were throughout the investigation. They worked collaboratively, shared ideas with their partners and used their recording sheets confidently to capture what they discovered.
It has been a fantastic opportunity for them to develop early scientific enquiry skills and to deepen their understanding of how the properties of materials help us decide what they are used for.
