10 Oct What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 6
This week, Year 1 had a truly exciting and memorable learning experience as part of our Black History Month celebrations!
We were delighted to welcome a special visitor from Hackney Museum, who delivered an engaging workshop all about the Windrush Generation. The children were immediately captivated by a mysterious suitcase, filled with belongings from the past. They took on the role of detectives—exploring each item and guessing who they might have belonged to.
We soon discovered that the suitcase told the story of a remarkable man named Eddie, who came to Britain as part of the Windrush Generation. Through his story, the children learned about the journey many people made from the Caribbean to the UK, and the important contributions they made to our communities.
The session was hands-on and thought-provoking. The children showed great curiosity and respect as they discussed Eddie’s life and the impact of the Windrush Generation on British society. They asked thoughtful questions and made brilliant connections to what they’ve been learning in class.
To round off the workshop in true celebratory style, the children got creative and designed their very own carnival outfits, inspired by the vibrant culture and traditions of the Caribbean. Feathers, colours, patterns – the results were fantastic!
We are so proud of how engaged, respectful and enthusiastic the children were throughout this experience. A huge thank you to Hackney Museum for bringing such an important piece of history to life for our young learners.
