12 Dec What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 6
This week in Maths, Year 1 have been introduced to shape, and the children have had a fantastic time exploring and talking about 2D shapes.
We began by naming and recognising shapes that the children already knew, including circles, squares, rectangles and triangles. The children practised saying the shape names clearly and spotting them in the classroom and everyday objects, helping them to understand that shapes are all around us.
The children then moved on to drawing 2D shapes carefully, focusing on forming straight and curved lines and noticing what makes each shape different. We talked about simple features, such as the number of sides and corners, and encouraged the children to describe what they noticed using mathematical language.
To finish the week, the children used a range of 2D shapes to create their own shape pictures. These included houses, robots, animals and imaginative designs. This activity supported creativity while reinforcing shape recognition and naming.
You could support learning at home by spotting 2D shapes together on signs, packaging or in books.
