13 Feb What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 6
In Science this half term, Year 1 have been learning all about animals, including humans. They started their unit by discussing their prior knowledge and generating a set of questions for things that they would like to find out.
The children learned all about animal diets and used their knowledge to classify animals into the following categories: carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. They also discovered that most humans are omnivores as our diets often consist of a combination of meat and plants. After this, the children went on to learn about the 5 different animal groups: mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians. They also discovered that humans are mammals because we have hair, breathe air through lungs and give birth to live babies.
In last week’s enquiry lesson, the children went on to combine their prior knowledge of animals with some independent research to create fact files!
