17 Oct What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 7
This week in Year 1, we have thoroughly enjoyed weaving our very own paper blankets as part of our art and cultural learning. The children showed fantastic focus and creativity as they worked carefully to interlace colourful strips of paper, creating beautiful woven designs inspired by traditional Kente cloth from Ghana.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been learning about the history and significance of Kente cloth, exploring how it is traditionally made and used to tell stories, represent identity, and celebrate special occasions. We looked closely at the vibrant colours and repeating patterns found in Kente designs and discussed what they might symbolise.
Before creating our own blankets, the children practised identifying and replicating repeating patterns using shapes and colours. It was wonderful to see them apply these skills when designing their final pieces. Each blanket was unique and reflected the children’s growing confidence in fine motor skills.
We are so proud of the care and enthusiasm the children have shown throughout this Art unit. The completed blankets will be on display by the end of next week!
