18 Dec What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 7
This week, Year 1 proudly completed our STEAM project by designing and building our final bridges. Over the course of the project, the children explored what makes a bridge strong and stable, learning that engineers must think carefully about shape, materials and structure.
The children planned their designs, tested different ideas and worked collaboratively to construct their bridges using a range of materials. They showed fantastic perseverance, especially when parts did not work as expected, and were encouraged to adapt and improve their designs. This helped them understand that making mistakes is an important part of learning and problem-solving.
Throughout the project, the children used scientific vocabulary such as strong, stable, balance and support, and applied their maths knowledge when measuring, counting and comparing lengths. They were also proud to explain how their bridges worked and what they would change next time.
The finished bridges were wonderful to see and really demonstrated the children’s creativity, teamwork and growing confidence as young engineers.
