19 Sep What’s happening in Year 4 – Week 3
This week in maths, we have been learning how to compare numbers up to 10,000. First, we practised using the correct mathematical language, such as greater than and less than. We learned that when comparing numbers, we start from the largest place value on the left-hand side of the place value chart. If the digits are the same, we move across to the next column.
To practise, we played a fun comparing game with our partners. We made numbers using counters on our place value charts and then revealed them to each other. One partner wrote a sentence such as “___ is bigger than ”, while the other wrote “ is smaller than ___”. This helped us grow in confidence with using the correct language.
Some children even went further and used the mathematical symbols greater than ( > ) and less than ( < ) in their work!
