06 Feb What’s happening in Year 5 – Week 5
This week in Year 5, we have been continuing our learning on the Ancient Greeks. On Wednesday, we had a fantastic time learning all about how the government of Athens worked; we travelled back in time and became Athenians. Discovering the three main heads of government – The Ekklesia, The Boule and the Dikasteria. These three heads were the decision makers and the judge. As Athenians, we learned about democracy and put it into action. We voted for our three government officials, who asked the people of Athens which issues they wanted raised at the Senate. Once a topic was selected, we again, as a democracy, voted for our new school rule. We did however have a thief in our room, who was found out by our Dikasteria, who promptly served justice to our thief.
This lesson led to great discussion on democracy and the comparisons of democracy in Ancient Greece and in Modern Britain, with children sharing their thought and opinions on the fairness of democracy.
