22 May What’s happening in Year 5 – Week 6
On Friday, Year 5 welcomed parents into the classroom to watch — and even vote in — our class debate. This half term’s debate statement was: “Tourism has a negative effect on safari locations.”
This debate linked perfectly with our Humanities and Writing topics, both of which are focused on Kenya, safari locations and the Maasai Tribe. The children were able to build on their prior knowledge of safari environments while also thinking critically about the positive and negative effects tourism can have on different locations.
The class was divided into proposition and opposition teams, with each team researching the effects of tourism using a range of resources. Pupils then organised themselves into roles including first speaker, second speaker, third speaker and summariser.
Using their research notes, the children worked collaboratively to create strong debate statements for their teams. They were also challenged to think on the spot by responding directly to points made by the opposing side.
The children represented Year 5 brilliantly, showing confidence, excellent speaking and listening skills, and thoughtful teamwork throughout the debate. Thank you to all the parents who joined us and supported the children during this exciting event.
