12 Jun What’s happening in Year 1 – Week 2
In Science this half term, Year 1 will be learning all about plants. To begin their unit of work, the children explored the main parts of a plant, including the roots, stem, leaves, and flowers, and used their growing knowledge to identify the role of each part. They learned that roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil; stems support the plant and transport water; leaves help make food from sunlight and flowers play an important role in the reproduction of plants.
The children then had the exciting opportunity to dissect a plant. Using their close observation skills, the children peeled away at the layers of a rose to discover what lay beneath. They were fascinated by what they discovered and enjoyed seeing the structures they had been learning about in real life. They children also enjoyed sharing their learning through scientific diagrams with labels.
