08 May What’s happening in Year 4 – Week 4
This week in Year 4, we had great fun exploring how sound travels by creating and testing our own cup phones. Using paper cups and string, we investigated how sound waves can travel through solids. We discovered that when we spoke into one cup, our voices created vibrations that travelled along the string to the other cup, allowing our partner to hear the message clearly. The children were excited to see how such simple materials could demonstrate an important scientific concept in such an engaging way.
As young scientists, we also carried out our own investigations by experimenting with different string lengths and testing what happened when the string was loose instead of stretched tightly. We noticed that the sound travelled best when the string was pulled taut, helping us understand how vibrations move more effectively through solids. It was wonderful to see the children asking thoughtful questions, making predictions and working collaboratively to explore sound transmission through hands-on learning.
