14 Jun What’s happening in Year 5 – Week 2
This week, Year 5 wrote free-verse poems about a Maasai welcoming ceremony. We used fronted adverbials to describe when, where and how events took place, we used figurative language to add interest to our descriptions (including similes, metaphors, alliteration and onomatopoeia) and we used ‘show me, don’t tell me’ descriptions to convey our thoughts and feelings about the experience.
The following poem is called ‘A Maasai Welcome’ by Lily.
When dawn hits,
Drums boom like roaring thunder,
Boom! Bang!
Beads bouncing beautifully,
Singing gloriously to welcome me.
When dawn hits,
My face, fascinated by the fantastic view,
Warmed by the Sun’s touch,
Maasai voices reach me like flames of fire,
Delighted smiles embrace me.
When dawn hits,
Elders make a blessing,
Whispers as soft as a fluffy pillow,
Thankful for everything,
Proudly, the elders stand, smiles on their faces,
What is going to happen next?
As twilight paints the sky,
Marvellous meals,
Unique dancing, I have never seen,
Stories light my imagination,
Memories stuck at the front of my mind,
The end of an unforgettable day.
