24 Feb What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 1
This week in history, the children in Year 6 used their historian skills to analyse some sources and find out about inventions of the Mayans. They began by looking at images and clarifying what they could see, before using this information to make a general inference. They then built upon these inferences by using a range of secondary sources (textbooks and the internet) to research and find out more about each invention. As they have studied other ancient civilisations in the past, the children were then able to make comparisons across them and state whether the Mayan inventions were similar or different to those of the Ancient Greeks and Ancient Romans. The class found out that the Mayan’s were responsible for: calendars, medicines, rubber, number systems and the study of astronomy!
Year 6 thoroughly enjoy taking ownership over their learning by conducting independent enquiries and they are a valuable tool to help them develop their history skills and knowledge.
