09 Dec What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 6
This week, Year 6 launched their first STEAM project of the year, with a focus on construction. In the design brief, the children were asked to create a periscope for a submarine that could have been used to spy on the enemy in World War 2.
As a class, we began by creating a design criteria that would guide the construction of our periscopes. The children decided that the three most important factors to consider were:
- A camouflage design, so that it would blend in with the water
- Accurate mirror angles, to ensure that enough light is reflected to show the actual image
- A comfortable focus lens
In maths, the children reviewed their prior knowledge of angles and used an angle finder to locate right-angled objects in the classroom.
In science, the children continued to build on their prior learning of light by exploring the concepts of reflection and reflection.
The children worked well together and enjoyed constructing, decorating and testing their periscopes out!
