21 Oct What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 8
Over the last few weeks, as part of our Black History Month celebrations, Year 6 have been exploring the country of Sierra Leone, in West Africa. We focused our studies specifically on the capital city, Freetown. Once the children had gained some background knowledge about the city and its importance in supporting the end of slavery, they began to unpick information about specific communities that still hold an influence over Freetown today. The West Africa Squadron was formed after slavery had been banned on 1808, and was made up of Royal Navy soldiers, who worked to stop Britain from trading across seas in slaves. We used a hot-seat activity to get to know more about the Squadron, including who it was made up of and why they thought it was needed.
