05 Jun What’s happening in Year 5 – Week 1
This week in Year 5, as part of our exciting ‘Let’s Go On Safari’ topic, we have been learning all about Africa’s famous Big Five animals. The children began by taking part in a fun and engaging game of ‘Who Am I?’, where they had to use clues to identify each animal. As the clues were revealed, the children successfully guessed the members of the Big Five: the buffalo, elephant, rhino, leopard and lion.
Following this, the children put their research skills to excellent use by exploring a range of non-fiction texts. They worked carefully to identify and highlight key information, including interesting facts about the animals’ habitats, diets, physical characteristics and behaviours. The class showed great enthusiasm and curiosity as they discovered more about these incredible creatures.
Using the information they gathered, the children then planned and created their own informative leaflets about the Big Five. They worked hard to organise their facts clearly, use appropriate headings and subheadings, and present their work in an engaging way for readers. It was wonderful to see the children applying their reading, research and writing skills so effectively.
We have been incredibly impressed with the children’s focus, teamwork and enthusiasm throughout the week. They have enjoyed learning about these magnificent animals and have produced some fantastic pieces of work. We look forward to continuing our safari adventure and discovering even more about the wildlife, geography and culture of Africa in the coming weeks!
