31 Mar What’s happening in Year 4 – Week 6
As part of our food unit for this half terms STEAM project, Year 4 made roti. Roti is a type of bread that is often served and enjoyed at traditional Hindu celebrations. To start the project off, the children sampled different types of bread and focused on using their senses to describe the taste, smell and texture. They then discussed their thoughts and set up a class vote, where the results were used to create a final design criteria.
Once all the research and planning was complete, the children worked in small groups to prepare the dough. They had to use the kneading technique to ensure that the air was spread evenly throughout.
The final stage was the cooking process. As roti is a flat bread that does not contain any raising agent, it does not taking very long to bake. Once the oil had been heated for a few minutes, the children carefully placed their dough squares inside the pan and let it rest on either side until slightly golden brown. Once cooled, the children all tasted their delicious warm bread and began to think about what they could do to further improve their recipes.
