Year 5 have had a very busy week!
On Wednesday, we visited the Lea Valley Nature reserve to observe wildlife that inhabits a marsh environment and to do some birdwatching. We kept a tally of the number of each species we saw, including mallard ducks, cormorants, coots, herons, thrushes and more!
In science, we set up electrical circuits and used them to test whether the bulb would light when a variety of household objects were placed inside the circuit. From our results, we were able to conclude that objects made of metal are electrical conductors (they did allow electricity to pass through and the bulb lit) whereas materials such as wood and plastic are electrical insulators (they did not allow electricity to pass through and the bulb did not light).
This half-term, we have been reading a non-fiction book about refugees and migrants. We have learnt about historical and modern reasons for the migration of people, read first hand accounts from people who have come to live in the UK from a different country (including some well-known faces) and have used a range of new vocabulary. We have been able to retrieve information from this tricky text, and use it to answer a range of questions, both independently and in collaboration with our partners.
