This week was Science Week! The theme this year is ‘changes over time’, so in keeping with our ‘properties of materials’ topic, we investigated whether all liquids flow at the same rate. We carried out all stages of an enquiry: prediction, planning, carrying out an experiment, analysing results and conclusion.
We made timers out of plastic bottles and tested whether the same volume of four different liquids (water, apple juice, lemonade and strawberry milk) would flow through it in the same amount of time. We discovered that the strawberry milk took a significantly longer time to pass through the small hole in our timer. We concluded that this was due to the higher viscosity of the strawberry milk – this means it was thicker than the others and so it has a greater resistance to flow.
On Tuesday, Year 5 visited The British Museum!
We began our day in the Ancient Greek exhibit, as it has been our history topic this term. We got to see an incredible collection of artefacts that have been discovered by archaeologists, including pottery, jewellery and friezes depicting famous battles. We even recognised some of the vases as the primary sources we have been studying in class!
Then we explored the Ancient Rome section, which we learnt about in the autumn term. We particularly enjoyed recognising the subjects of the statues as the Roman gods we knew, such as Apollo.
After lunch, we tried to take in as much of the other exhibits as we could, including those on Egypt, Japan and Mexico. Although we spent the whole day there, there is still more to explore and we can’t wat to return!
