07 Jun What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 1
In our most recent writing cycle, Year 6 planned and wrote contrasting setting descriptions to depict the summer and winter months in the Arctic region. The children used their immersion lesson to take inspiration from our key text: Sky Song by Abi Elphinstone. During the planning process, they thought carefully about how language choices can impact the mood of the text and how to manipulate these choices to ensure that the mood reflected their authorial intentions.
Here is a short snippet of Jedaiah’s work – can you guess what season she is trying to describe?
Gathering amongst the clouds, the harsh winds blow against your face sending you a minor warning. Trapped inside, the clicking and clacking of doors echoes all over, as the enraged, unbearable cold presses against the houses. Piercing your ears, whispers devour you – they trap you, they push you to levels so deep you’ll crack. Are you going yo stop reading yet?
The next example of writing comes from Khamil – can you spot the ways in which he creates a contrasting mood in a different season?
When brightness finally encapsulates the darkness, glistening off the icebergs, a crimson light is formed. Tiptoeing gently, the arctic fox, slowly yet elated, crawls out of his dark burrow with a cunning smile breaking across its warm face. Polar bears emerge from the snow, stretching their limbs with delightment, as they prepare to hunt for food. The soothing, soft touch of summer trickles down your spine and the stars hide away behind the fluffy, grey clouds. The sun grins cheerfully, as summer is, in fact, here.
