This week in history, the children were learning all about the Mayan leader: Pakal the Great. They explored the details shown in a range of sources of evidence and asked questions about what they could see. The children also discussed the reliability of the sources – thinking carefully about how much explicit information they provided regarding the enquiry question.
Some of the key information that the children found out about Pakal the Great were:
- He became King at aged 12
- Pakal reigned for 68 years, making him the second longest reigning monarch in history
- Kings in Ancient Maya had their identities protected by wearing elaborate masks when they were making public appearances
