13 Jan What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 2
The Year 6 teachers have been extremely impressed with the pupils’ poetry writing this week. They have been using their class text, Macbeth by William Shakespeare, to support them in writing some fantastic poems about the three witches that Macbeth encounters at the beginning of the play. Shakespeare has written a poem which depicts the gruesome ingredients thrown into the witches’ cauldron. Have a look at Anthony’s wonderful poem that he wrote in a similar style. He has managed to use a range of figurative language, prepositional phrases to tell his reader where and when the action is happening and even used rhyming couplets. Well done Anthony!
When shall we three meet again?
In thunder, lightning or in rain?
Under the darkness that engulfed the cave,
Three hooked noses stood in front of a grave,
Hyenas plotting and sniffing out prey,
Ready to hunt and waiting for the day,
At midnight, their eyes spell trouble,
Gathering around the cauldron, to watch it bubble,
The stench of the cauldron – a scent like hell,
Macbeth is under the dreaded spell.
When shall we three meet again?
In thunder, lightning or in rain?
When the darkness descends on the eerie light,
Within the cave, the three hissing serpents glide at night,
They eagerly sniff out the blood of one man,
“All Hail Macbeth!” they chant throughout the land,
Their voices screech like a monster from hell,
As they canish to begin their spell.
When shall we three meet again?
In thunder, lightning or in rain?
Above the cauldron, the witches sing,
Add a five-hundred-year-old bumble bee’s sting,
Chuck in a baby strangled a long time ago,
A rat’s tail and a toad’s toe,
Above the cauldron, we see bubbles, as they giggle in glee,
Whilst the blind eyes in the cauldron try to see,
Head of a chick and leg of a dog,
Add a potion, mix cats and a hog.
In their Spanish lessons, Year 6 have been reviewing some of their prior learning and using it to help them develop confidence in writing tasks. In the past, we have learned about parts of the body (las partes del cuerpo) and parts of the face (las partes de la cara). We built on this knowledge by describing specific features of our bodies, including eye colour, hair colour and hair styles. We then combined our knowledge and independently wrote descriptions for characters that we created on Wanted posters!
