16 Sep What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 3
In writing lessons, Year 6 have been reading ‘The Silver Sword’ by Ian Serraillier. The story follows a headmaster, named Joseph Balicki, and the torment that he was surrounded by when the Nazi’s took over his town during World War 2. The children really immersed themselves into the text and thought carefully about how Joseph and his family members would have been feeling during this difficult time. They then used this to inspire them to write letters, as if they were Joseph, explaining what had happened to him on a bleak, bitter night. Paul wrote an amazing letter, where he included a range of fantastic descriptions. Here is a snippet of his work:
“Dear Margrit,
They have brought me to a devastating concentration camp called Zakyna, in the bleak mountains of South Poland. Day and night, the blistering-cold violently beats us down into shattering pieces. This place is colourless with no joyful life in sight, since all these soul-less people do is fight over newspapers. The camp is soul-less and the people move like zombies. Their bodies are as stiff as a rusty bike pedal, because there is no rest for anyone.”
