20 Jan What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 3
In science this term, Year 6 are learning all about ‘Animals including Humans’.
We are focusing our studies on the circulatory system and how we can manage factors that will affect it, for example sugar, exercise and coffee.
This week, we conducted our first scientific enquiry in small groups, which required us to use our scientific skills of observing. We began by learning about heart rates and learned how to measure them. We then used our prior knowledge to set up and carry out an investigation to answer our enquiry question: Do boys have a higher pulse rate than girls?
Some children predicted that boys would have a lower pulse rate because they tend to be more active at playtimes; whilst other children thought that there would be no difference in pulse rates as we are measuring in a small age range.
To conduct our enquiry we all checked and recorded our resting heart rates after being sat in our classroom for about 5 minutes. We then took part in a five minute exercise routine, led by Joe Wicks, and immediately checked our pulse rates again as the routine ended. We collected a variety of results, which we will share and analyse next week to allow us to fully answer our enquiry question!
