01 Dec What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 5
In Year 6, the children have been using their class text, The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier, to inspire their writing. The text is based around the events of World War II and the children have loved making links between the story and their historical knowledge. In our most recent writing cycle, the children transformed into the character of Ruth Balicki – a 13 year old girl, whose family had been massively affected by the war. The children wrote persuasive letters to Mr. Winston Churchill, Prime Minister at the time, to plead for his help.
Here is a snippet of Mason’s letter, where is thought really carefully about his language choices to ensure that he really engaged his reader:
Dear Mr Winston Churchill,
My name is Ruth Balicki and I am a thirteen year old girl, who is caring for a three year old baby. I am writing this letter to you, as I need your help to find my lovely family, including my mum, dad and brother. Thinking about it, I believe you are a very powerful man, who can fix my problem. Could you imagine being in the situation I am in? I have no home, nothing; all I have is my baby sister, who I have no choice but to care for. Some days I can keep a smile on my face; other days I can barely find the courage to fake a smile for her. Can you help me? Please.
