19 May What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 5
This week in art, Year 6 have been creating some masterpieces, based on developing the skills and techniques used to create collaged images that represent their identity. The children took inspiration from British artist, Sonia Boyce, who is of Caribbean heritage and lives in North London.
From a very young age, Boyce found herself drawing in the margins of her school books and finding ways to represent her community in her doodles. With encouragement from her teachers, she went on to art school and is now a Professor of Black Art and Design at the University of Arts London.
Sonia’s works with the Black Art Movement throughout the 1980’s highlighted questions around race and cultural representations in a variety of art forms. Boyce worked alongside various other artists to find ways to better represent political messages and perceptions of people from African and Caribbean heritage. Her famous piece, ‘She Ain’t Holdin’ Them Up, She’s Holdin’ On’ was the focus artwork for Year 6.
