06 Oct What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 5
In Year 6, the children have been reading and taking inspiration for their writing from key text: The Silver Sword by Ian Serralier.
The week the children wrote setting descriptions of a prison camp in Zakyna, where the main character Joseph Balicki, is being held after being captured by the Nazi’s. Read a snippet of Romans’ description below – he used a carefully selected range of language to ensure that his writing was consistent in creating a negative mood towards the camp.
No nose is tough enough to sustain the stench of this camp. The nebulous tingle of gas keeps you at bay, as you venture into a hut to find dead bodies slumped on the ground. The musty pong of cigarettes is so treacherous, not even the guards can escape it. It swoops up Joseph’s nose, clogging up his throat. Only guards are privileged, as the poisoning reek of dung and urine kill senses. The sheer dread of having to inhale this odor is nothing but unbearable; even the tiniest crack in the wall gives way to a storm that will smack you in the face. But, none of these smells compare to the congested food hall, where the smell of slop, sweat, blood and farts knock the life out of prisoners.
