07 Oct What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 6
As part of our Diverse Britain curriculum, this week Year 6 visited Hackney Museum to explore their ‘Movers, Makers and Community shakers’ exhibition, which tells a wonderful story of African heritage in Hackney.
The session was led by a local artists, who provided the children with stories about various people from our local community and told about how these individuals have used their African heritage to make change within our local area. The children were provided with opportunities to explore the artefacts on display and ask questions about them, which gave a deep insight to the history and lives of our diverse communities in Hackney.
The children then turned their focus to art – they used a range of African fabrics to cut out symbols that represented them as individuals and stuck these around a self portrait. When we put out individuals pieces together, it creates a beautiful scene and tells its own story of diversity in our classrooms.
