31 Mar What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 6
This week in Diverse Britain, Year 6 have been learning about The Mangrove 9 – they are an activist group, who used a peaceful protest to stand up for their rights after the Metropolitan Police constantly raided their restaurant and pushed its customers away.
The Mangrove restaurant was set up in Notting Hill in 1969 by Frank Crichlow, a Trinidadian man who travelled to the UK as part of the Windrush Generation. After a few months, it became the target of police attention, which eventually led to 9 men being arrested and charged with crimes related to riots. After a long court case, the jury eventually saw that the police had targeted the restaurants with racist intentions and therefore, all charges were dropped. We discovered lots of fascinating things about the Notting Hill area, and thoroughly enjoyed expanding our knowledge our the diversity that resides in Britain.
