25 May What’s happening in Year 6 – Week 6
This week, Year 6 have been carrying out their Food and Nutrition STEAM project. The children have worked in small groups to design, make and evaluate a savoury scone. To begin, the children explore the ingredients list of a variety of recipes; they saw the term ‘seasonal vegetables’ often referred to. They then carried out some independent research to establish what vegetables are best grown in the summer months.
After the research was finished, the children prepared their palettes for a taste test! They sampled a variety of foods and used their senses to evaluate their appearance, smell, texture and (most importantly) taste. Most children really liked the taste of the all-butter and fruit scones; whilst most agreed that the spring onion had a very strong taste that was hard to get rid of.
In the following lesson, the children used their scientific knowledge to produce posters about how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The researched the ingredients being used in our savoury scone recipes to ensure that they knew about the nutritional value of the scones. In small groups, the children then went on to draw upon their maths knowledge and use ratios and scale factors to amend a recipe depending on the serving size required.
Finally, it was time to get making! We focused on using the technique of rubbing to blend the ingredients together to form a soft crumble, before adding the fillings of our choice. Before starting, we had to gather the necessary utensils and think carefully about hygiene measures to ensure that we were clean and ready to prepare food.
Year 6 had a wonderful time designing and making their scones, and the feedback after tasting them was generally positive; some people still preferred the sweet scones that we tasted earlier in the week, but the savoury ones were prepped and cooked to perfection!
